Biography

Known as an “Architectural designer of the face,” she works as a makeup artist but is known as the ultimate art director on the set.

Her makeup is based on human anatomy. Her makeup can be visually striking, but she can also create a simple, natural look that still enhances the subject’s appearance. Her collaborators and colleagues have consistently praised the execution of her makeup and vision. Her visions, her techniques, and her experiences as a sensational idealist keep influencing the industry.

Born in Kumamoto, in southern Japan, Asami was an ill child, which often required her to stay at home. During that time, she began to occupy herself indoors, first by learning to play the piano. She practiced and attended numerous national piano competitions and continued to win prizes, including the best player of the year.

At the age of four, she was introduced to painting by her piano teacher to help Asami express herself better and to organize her story line. Her teacher required her to interpret the music through painting before an annual recital. At the time, Asami hated this experience, she said, “It was awful. I couldn’t even sketch the face of a dog. So I decided to go out and closely look at the dog to inspect him.” Later, she discovered her interest in crafting and painting, and she created prize-winning paintings and sculptures. In addition, her creative writing was published in Japanese national youth writing award annual summary book.

Asami moved to New York. While she was studying English there, she attended a workshop held by Linda Mason for fun. Linda noticed Asami’s potential and told her that she should pursue her career as a makeup artist. Asami took Linda’s advice and she started assisting Lisa Butler. One year later, a French designer, Catherine Malandrino, discovered Asami and started including her in her projects.

At Salon 94 on the Upper Eastside, Asami collaborated with an artist, Michele Lamy, who is the muse, and the biggest collaborator to designer Rick Owen. This exhibition, “Adorned and Unfiltered,” was a collaboration between jewelry designer Alexander Calder, Michele, and Asami as the beauty contributorIt has been featured inStyle and Vogue among other websites and publications.

Asami has created images and collaborated art projects with many influentials in the art and fashion industries such as for Amber Medda, Deborah Lippmann, Michele Lamy, Zac Posen as well as of actors and singers Beck, Brie Larson, Chloe Sevigny, Demi Moore, Kylie Minogue, Maya Hawkes, Lindsay Lohan Uma Thurman and many more.

The list of photographers that she has worked with are Alessi Boni, Bruce Gilden, Cameron Postforoosh, Colin Dodgson, Davit Giorgadze, Gia Coppola, Mark Peckmezian, Terry Richardson, Tierney Gearon and so on.

Asami had worked as key makeup artist for Brooks Brothers Women in collaboration with their creative director, Zac Posen on shows by create each seasonal look from 2014 to 2020.
